Description

Leatherworking allows you to make pieces of armour from skins you have acquired by skinning dead animals and other creatures. You need a set of leathercrafters equipment to start crafting. You might also have to combine a few pieces of skin to get a large enough piece. Reinforced armour -- ring mail, studded, bezainted, scale mail or brigandine -- is made in two halves. A smith forges the metal component; you keep that component loose in your inventory and marry it to a skin at your leathercrafting equipment, naming the armour type in the item, for example 'make ring mail vest from wolf skin using rings'. You can check the pairing before you spend the skin with 'estimate <skin> for <item> using <component>'. For reinforced armour the size of the piece follows the size of the reinforcing material. The value of what you make follows the value of the skin (humanoid skins are known to be worthless) and of the reinforcement, its size and its toughness. Your knife, dexterity, wisdom, training in leatherworking, craftsmanship and fine hand coordination, and the type of armour you are making will also play a big role.

The set is carried with you: 'setup equipment' lays it out and 'pack equipment' puts it away again. A province Workshop with a leatherworks is the other place to work -- its station is permanent, so there is nothing to set up or pack, but the local leatherworkers will not share their bench until you hold Trusted standing with that settlement. The crafting commands are the same at either:

  make [amount/all] <item> from <skin> [size <size in cm>]
  make [amount/all] <item> from <skin> using <component>
       [size <size in cm>]
  make [amount/all] dragonscale <item> from <scale type>
       [using odd-looking scales] [size <size in cm>]
  estimate <skin> for <item> [using <component>] [size <size in cm>]
  combine <skin1> and <skin2>
A number in place of the amount makes that many, and 'all' keeps the batch
going as long as it can: 'make all caps from wolf skin'.

As well as armours you can also make the following objects:

ammo pouch, arrow case, arrowhead case, bag, cross scabbard, dagger
bandolier, design case, huge scabbard, quiver, quiver carrier, runed
arrowhead case, runed shard pouch, sack, shard pouch, sleeping bag,
sling, tent, twin scabbard, vial container and wallet.
